I never try and guess people's ages because I generally offend. If I were to hazard a guess though, and I mean this with the utmost respect, I'd say they were in their sixties. After 9 o'clock in the morning, you see lots of women (and men) that age at bus stops and on the bus.

It was late afternoon - a busy visiting time - and so I felt quite lucky to find a spare lamp-post to lock my bike against. It was at the Brougham Place entrance.

There used to be a large bike locker there. It was in the middle of the drive-through space you can see in the picture below:

They had little signs on them saying "Traffic Survey".

I get concerned when I see that because it could mean a couple of things.

First, they could simply be counting cars. The consequence may be that they count a given number of cars passing in a given hour and conclude that more space is required. Councils have been told not to issue any more fines for parking in bike lanes while a legal issue is resolved. Apparently, the bike lanes are unenforceable because the Road Rules do not allow for bike lanes that are only in use for a few hours a day.

It might be because they are a stupid idea.

It is on the Department of Infrastructure website and shows a video of the new trains the Government is buying for the railway network once it is electrified. The inside of the trains are, as you would expect, light and open and have generous space for wheelchair users and prams and things.

It only had a population of about 250,000 but it had a great railway station next to which was a proper bus terminal. They couldn't have been better situated because on the other side of the road was the main shopping centre. The bus station was on both sides of the road to cater for buses going in both directions.

Why they are there I do not know. At the moment, the equivalent of a lane of traffic has been closed. A bus stop is also out of action.

The interesting thing is that, certainly on my biased observations, it has made no difference at all to traffic during our 15 minute rush hour.
